The meaning behind: The Beni.....

My design inspiration typically comes from experiences I have had during a specific season of life.  Throughout the month September and October I continued to feel a lot of change in the air....an unusual amount of change. As I was sensing this I would also hear the sound of bells.Whether I was working in the studio, at the post office or shopping downtown, I would hear bells everywhere. I knew that the sound of bells and feeling of change was connected somehow and researched it a little more.

In my research I found that a bells ring actually corrects frequencies. It overwhelms other frequencies and over powers them until they resonate on the same frequency. It's a correction sound. It draws to it a community to resound in unison. It is my belief that the things that have been out of order are now coming into order. It is a divine order that brings peace and stability. To me, the bell represents correction, order and balance.

I designed the Beni necklace based on this experience. Named after one of my favorite mystics, this piece is made of African brass, antique trade beads and a single antique African brass bell.

The language of numbers.....

For the past couple of years I have been learning about what I would call the "language of numbers".  I am the type of person to see signs everywhere..... license plate numbers.... the time on a clock.......billboards.....television shows... you name it. As a futurist , I am always looking at the horizon asking myself what's next??

Lately, I have had discussions with a few friends and have found that we are all seeing the same thing. So, for clarity sake, whether these numbers have personal meaning or apply to us corporately, here is my belief and interpretation of what they mean.

123- Everything is aligning
333- Radical change
777- Completion
444- New creative works
888- New beginnings
11:11- Transition

Here is what I feel is going on corporately........

The past few years have been great seasons of transition for many people. During these seasons, we have been prepared for what is coming. We are moving from a place and time of transition into a season of new things and new beginnings. It is the beginning of the new and the end of the old. The things that have seemed difficult to overcome or navigate will be quickly resolved. Things that have remained unclear and uncertain will begin to become clear as things align. The directions and opportunities that have seemed unclear or hidden will begin to present themselves. What we didn't think was possible will become possible. We will see the things that we have hoped and dreamed for. I feel that there is great potential to accomplish big things in this next year and to see the fruit of what we have been working towards the past couple years.

2013 is going to be very exciting!

Happy Birthday K&P!

It has been one amazing year since we started! I could not have done it without my close friends and family..... you know who you are! Things I thought would happen in 2 to 3 years happened very quickly and I am incredibly thankful for the success that we have had so far.  I have met the most amazing people this year and have had the best support from our customers and boutiques. We have laughed....we have cried.....but most of all we have stood in awe over the opportunity and success of the past year.  I am truly grateful for this last season and look forward with great anticipation for what is ahead! Thank you to all who have been part of the journey so far... the best is yet to come!

The story behind: The Craftsman....

I am often asked what the meaning is behind the stones and sacred wood beads and what specific pieces of jewelry mean. "The Craftsman", our most popular necklace, is one of the first pieces I designed- a mother of pearl Tibetan horn,  repurposed Tibetan prayer beads, Indian brass collar beads, Hill Tribe sterling silver hammered rings and leather cord.

I created the Craftsman because of a dream I had. The dream was warm and light. All I heard in the experience was "TWO HORNS". I heard this over and over again. It was as though the words were becoming a part of me. As I heard the words, I began to understand the power and influence of creative design. I saw landscapes and scenes that are difficult to describe and some that I could not recall when I awoke. It was as though books of knowledge were being downloaded. This was so real  I felt like I was actually there. The dream lasted a few minutes, I am sure, but it felt like an eternity.

I have thought about this dream often and it has taken years to realize the significance of that experience. I know now that a horn symbolizes authority. I believe there is a tremendous authority that is being released on those in the creative arts, to mold and shape culture and to redefine the world as we know it. As a designer, I do not take this authority lightly. My goal is to create designs that are not just beautiful but have a purpose. I am often told that people feel more powerful when they wear KINGS&PRIESTS jewelry. My hope is that each customer of K&P finds a piece that speaks to them, a piece that they can wear every day and that stays with them through the seasons of life. Our pieces are meant to be representations of strength, hope and love. And that will never go out of style............

Meditation Monday: Book worm....

I have always been a sucker for books....particularly old books. Even when I was younger I loved to place them around my bedroom in stacks as a make shift night stand or side table. Summer reading was one of my favorite past times and I can still remember the smell of the Ojai Library where my mom used to take us every week to pick out a new title. As I grew older, I kept most of the books that I had growing up and my collection has grown. I can't seem to part with them because in truth, they represent parts of my past and my journey to adulthood. They have become part of me and have made me who I am today.

I was considering recently the books that remain in our house and their direct connection to my identity. It occurred to me that if you are keeping books or things around you that do not reveal who you are, then you are living for someone other than yourself. This is simple but true. Have you ever been invited into someone's home that seemed to reflect a different persona than who you knew that person to be?

We all have aspirational goals of who we want to be or what we want, but if our creativity or work does not come from a place of truly understanding who we are, then we are not being authentic and whatever we produce is not as powerful as it would be if we were truly connected to who we were. We will produce a false representation of ourselves or of an idea we are trying to communicate. We will compare ourselves to others and their creativity, gifts and abilities and wonder why ours our not the same. I firmly believe that if we truly knew the beauty and uniqueness that existed in ourselves and believed in communicating that to the world.. we could change anything. The world is big enough for every gift and every talent to have a voice.

Run your own race.. be your own person... discover the gifts and abilities you possess. “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” St Catherine of Siena
